106Jay at Winay Wayna * Here's a picture of me beside the gate with a view way down to the river. * 1600 x 1200 * (450KB)
107Gate of the Sun before Machu Picchu * Next was the Gate of the Sun.
 * 1600 x 1200 * (424KB)
108first view of Machu Picchu * the first place where you can see Machu Picchu (where we had to wait 15 minutes for the clouds to part before we could see the view--but it was worth it)
 * 1600 x 1200 * (401KB)
113above Machu Picchu * We then finished our hike to Machu Picchu where we had a great view from above the ruins.
 * 1600 x 1200 * (427KB)
114Jay at Machu Picchu * And here's the proof that I was there (isn't that why we carry our cameras everywhere?) * 1417 x 1200 * (639KB)

115Inca drawbrige * Before going to our hotels and our much-needed showers we walked to the Inca drawbridge: an open section of the very steep part of the trail that would have been very hard to cross without the wooden board.
 * 1600 x 1200 * (452KB)
116Machu Picchu at dawn * The next day we got up early to have a view of the site without tourists.

123southern cross stone * Here's a stone that is in the exact shape and orientation of the southern cross constallation. * 1600 x 1200 * (451KB)
124Jay at astronomical observatory * Of course, I had to get a picture of myself next to the main astonomical observatory store which again was aligned exactly to the compass directions. They really had a sophisticated science. * 1600 x 1200 * (541KB)

125shadow stone * Finally, here are pictures of two shadow stones (which mimic the shape of the mountains behind them).

(two pics)
 * 1600 x 1200 * (407KB)
126shadow stone * That day we got to take a bus ride down the steep hill (and many switchbacks) to the valley floor and the train station. We then caught the train back to Cusco which was notable both for its great views of the Urubamba river as well has the 5 traintrack switchbacks needed to gain and lose elevation faster than the tracks could handle.

The next day we toured the archeological museum, the chaotic public market, and the city mausoleum before having the afternoon off. At that time I again got onto the Internet--this time for only 2.5 soles an hour. At night we had our farewell dinner.

The next day was a long one. We flew to Lima early in the morning. Had a tour of the Gold Museum and adjoining armory (with more stuff than you can imagine) and then went to the airport for a long wait. My flight was supposed to leave at 1:45am but didn't take off until 3:30am. So I waited 6 hours in the Lima airport, then almost 4 hours in LA before getting my final flight to San Jose and home. * 1600 x 1200 * (403KB)
