abkk-001 * Indochina 2003-2004
This is my photo album and journal of my trip to Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia with a couple of days in Bangkok at the beginning to reset my internal clock.

Bangkok

Thailand fast facts: population 60 million and the economy depends on rice (number 1 exporter in the world), manufacturing, and tourism. Literacy rate: 94%.

After getting caught up on my sleep I did some touring in Bangkok. First off was Wat Trimit home of the Golden Buddha. This statue weighs 5½ tons! Don't you think the statue looks better with me in front of it? The final picture to the right is of the building where the dead are prepared for cremation.

Next was Wat Po home of the Reclining Buddha. This statue is 15 meters high and 46 meters long! There was no room for me to back up and get a good shot of the whole thing so I did it in sections. This may be a good time to tell you that the word Wat means a temple complex consisting of many buildings (gates, altars inside the actual temples, residences for monks, gift shops , etc.). You will see that word a lot in this report.

For a change of pace I also went on a boat ride down the Chao Phaya River and the canals leading into it. It was a pleasant day on the boat. The last picture shows the type of long-tailed speed boat that I rode in.

The final Wat I visited in Bangkok was Wat Benchamabopit.

On this trip I was very proud that I was able to log onto the Internet every day of the trip. This involved a fair bit of exploration to find reasonably priced cafes since some of the hotels where I stayed cost a lot more than the locals paid. I paid a low of 2/3 of a cent per minute in Hue and Hoi An and a maximum of 2 2/3 cents per minute in Hanoi. I also had a lot of fun seeing who used the net (like the novice monks in Luang Prabang) and the culture surrounding the cafes.
