The comorrants have a cord tied around their necks so they can't swallow the fish they catch underwater. The string is loose enough that they can swallow small fish. They are trained to understand some verbal commands and are told to return to the boat so that the firsherman can remove the fish from the bird and place it in a basket. At the end of the night they get a fish as their reward.

They only do this for tourists. The birds don't catch enough fish to make it viable compared to using nets.

The cruise goes from Guilin to Yangshuo. Karst peaks delight at each bend of the river. Water buffalo patrol the fields, peasants tend rice paddies, school kids and fishermen float by on bamboo rafts. The scenery along the Li River is one of Chia's top destinations.
