Usenet newsgroups offer on line sites for discussions about folk music. In many of the commercial on-line services, folk music has become a subgroup under categories like world music, or under rock and country. You need Internet access from your mail service to access it. America Online and others provide this. Usually you can add any Internet newsgroup to a personal list of newsgroups by first conducting a search and then following instructions to add it to your list. Some newsgroups to try include: alt.guitar.tabtablature for guitar playersaustin.musicmostly locals sharing there announcements on the austin music scenerec.folk-dancingrec.music.celticyup.rec.music.country-westernrec.music.country.old-timetraditional string band music, fiddle/banjo and beyondrec.music.dylanBob of courserec.music.folkcontemporary and traditional folkrec.music.infowide variety of musical topics, mostly commercial streamrec.music.makers.guitar.acousticdiscussion on acoustic guitar playingrec.music.makers.songwritingdiscussion of songwriting from the practicioner's point of view (not limited to folk)rec.music.newagelots of Yanni dribble but also some good chat on acoustic guitarists and jazz/folk instrumentalistsrec.music.ragtimesoc.culture.celticCeltic culture (not just music).
